  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1.25 cups whole milk
  • 0.25 cup maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1 loaf stale bread like a large French baguette, sliced (~14 slices)
  • powdered sugar for dusting
  • sliced strawberries for garnish (optional)
  • chopped nuts for garnish (optional)
  • maple syrup for serving (optional)

Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. Prepare. Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Arrange bread slices in the dish and set aside.
  2. Make the custard. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Add eggs and continue mixing. Incorporate milk, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, and orange zest until fully combined.
  3. Combine. Pour the custard evenly over the bread slices.
  4. Refrigerate. Cover and refrigerate overnight or for at least 20-30 minutes before baking.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F. Remove the dish from fridge and let sit at room temperature for 15 minutes.
  6. Bake. Bake uncovered for 35-40 minutes until golden and set.
  7. Finish and serve. Dust with powdered sugar. Garnish with strawberries and nuts if desired, and drizzle with maple syrup.
