Preparation Steps
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  4. Gradually add boiling water to the batter, mixing well. The batter will be thin.
  5. Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
